This pipeline is an Environmental
Protection Facility (EPF) as defined in the Hard Rock/Metal Mining Rules, hence a Rule 8 notification was
required. Henderson acted by turning off the return pumps and draining the pipeline back to containment in
the seep water canal below the tailing dam. The seep water canal is also an EPF. This leak was not
reportable to the Water Quality Control Division since the leakage did not reach Waters of the State, and
was not reportable to the National Reporting Center as no hazardous substances were spilled in a reportable
quantity. Ms. Beierle left another voice mail at 11:42 am on Monday June 2, 2003 stating that the flow of
the leak on Saturday had been measured at 0.5 gallons per minute. It took 12 hours to drain the pipeline, so
the maximum total leakage is estimated to be 450 gallons. All leakage was contained on Henderson
property. Henderson will excavate to expose the pipeline and will provide a written report of the
investigation and repairs.
ec: Bruce Humphries, DMG (via email)
Cazl Mount, DMG (via email)
Anne Beierle, Climax Molybdenum Co., (via email)
c:\acs\My Documents\Henderson return line leak MTF.dce
Office of
Mined Land Reclamation
Office of
Active and Inactive Mines
Geological Survey
