The comment was satisfactori]y addressed in the January 9, 1990 submittal.
42. Please provide a map delineating the drainage areas referred to as Area
1 through Area 5. Please provide additional Clarification on why the 100
year 24 hour storm event was used to determine velocities. T'he Division
suggests that parabolic channels be constructed instead of V-shaped
channels to approximate the naturai channels in the area. Please commit
to monitoring the channels for sediment build-up or erosion to ensure that
the channels are functioning properly.
Figure E-2 is provided to delineate the drainage areas 1 through 5 on the
reclaimed tailings surface.
The velocities presented in the response were actual velocities for the
2 year 24 hour storm event and not the 100 year 24 hour event indicated
in the response.
BMR has designed V-shaped channels to keep the channel area as small as
possible as an aid in maintaining as consistent a velocity with varying
flows across the tailings as possible to help prevent sediment deposition.
Parabolic channels will result in varying channel velocities and subject
to flow may result in deposition and subsequent remobilization of sediment.
