Appendix B: Photographs <br />Following is a selection of photographs of the site. These were all taken on the same day, July 10, 2002. In <br />some cases, the photograph is at the top ofthe page and at the bottom of the page is a sketch of the image with <br />various labels to show certain features of importance in the photograph. Due to the fact that 2002 was an unusually <br />dry year (some experts consider it a 100 year drought event), the vegetation vigor, with the exception of the stream <br />bed vegetation, is considerably lower than usual. Where appropriate, adjacent natural vegetation is also provided in <br />the image for comparison purposes. With the streambed vegetation, changes in the growth can occur at any time <br />due to the occurrence of strong thunderstorms. Streambeds in this area normally are either dry or carry only small <br />an7ounts of water. But strong or severe thunderstorms can produce devastating flash floods that can carry great <br />quantities of water down these drainages. These flows can be severe enough to wash out roads and bridges and <br />therefore changes in the channel vegetation are to be expected and are considered to be inevitable; it is just a <br />question of when that will happen, not if it will happen. In some cases, entire revegetation units could be destroyed <br />leaving nothing more than a sandy stream bed.
