Appendix A: Adequacy of Cover Sampling
Following aze the graphs that plot number of samples vs. the running average cover value for each of the
transects. Shown on each graph is the selected zone where the minimum number of samples is determined to show
an accurate representation of the mean cover of each vegetation unit. These graphs show that in all cases the
number of samples taken was greater than the minimum number required to adequately define the cover values of
the vegetation unit. The lazge variation in the minimum number of samples required from transect to transect
provides a picture of the degree of variation found within the vegetation units. The larger the minimum number of
samples required the greater the variation in cover values for that unit. These graphs can be used to indicate the
minimum number of samples required For each unit if further sampling is to be done, however the actual number of
samples taken should always be greater than the muumum because the degree of variation within a vegetation unit
can vary with season, year, and other exogenic environmental factors.
Reclamation Status -Coal Creek Resources M-1988-044 August 2002 Page 9 of 10
