III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII • ~ 11317SCountygRoad 250
April 21, 1989 Durango, CO 81301
Dan Hernandez
Mined Land Reclamation Division
1313 Sherman Street Room 215
Denver, CO 80203-2273
Dear Dan,
This letter is in follow-up [o our recent phone conversation,
wherein I voiced my concerns about gravel mining operations in the
Animas River in general and specifically regarding the operations of
Animas Aggregates Inc. at 34606 U.S. Highway 550, Durango, Colorado.
They are operating in NEZ Section 36 T37N R9W under permit ~~M-7E~-020
Phone: (303)247-2707.
My concern is in regard to the amount of gravel that is leing
removed from the pit which supply is being regenerated at the expense
and to the detriment of the immediately adjacent property owner; as
well as those properties upstream of the operation.
As a result of the large quantities of material being removed,
the river bed has dropped drastically over the passed years and the
river front portions of our properties are crumbling into the river
to fill the void left by the extraction. This erosion and gravel
consumption is eating its way upstream, and has already effected
landowners ability to get water to [he head gates of their ditches
thus rendering it impossible to appropriate their water as has been
historically utilized since the late 1800's. This must stop! The
drop in the river bed and water elevations is creeping passed my property
to the two major Animas Valley Ditch Company head gates. This could
potentially make it impossible for these ditch companies to deliver
water to all the owners in the Animas Valley.
Please consider this now, before it is too late to remedy the
situation.
Thank you very much for your consideration.
Sincerely,
~~ ~~~
Geof Schlittgen ~
F~'
L @ ,~ ~~ ~'~ ,I Y ~
~~ft ~.
~ ~ iG~9
'~. ~ ;i~.
