Mr. and Mrs. Tatum
March 16, 1995
Page 7
and presence of joints and other discontinuities in the rock, ground water conditicns,
etc.
The recent distress at the residence has been occurring since the mining has taken
place. Given the possible closeness of the mine workings and the timing of mining, in
our opinion mine subsidence provides a reasonable explanation for the damage that has
been observed.
SUMMARY
In summary, the Tatum residence has been damaged by settlement or displacements that are
primarily evident in the two-story portion of the residence. However, recent cracks appear in
other portions of the structure also. We have considered a variety of reasons for the damage
that has occurred. Evidence does not exist to categorically attribute the damage to a specific
cause; therefore, judgment has to be applied. Considering the possible causes of the damage,
it is our opinion that surface movements due to coal mine subsidence are a likely reason for
the damage.
LIMITATIONS
In this report, we have presented judgements and opinions using existing data and our
understanding of site conditions.
