NATURAL RESOURCES CONSERVATION SERVICE <br />CONSERVATION PRACTICE STANDARD <br />CRITICAL AREA PLANTING <br />(Acre) <br />CODE 342 <br />DEFINITION <br />Establishing permanent vegetation on sites that <br />have or arcs expected to have hiyh erosion rates. <br />and on sites that have physical, chemical or <br />biological Conditions that prevent the <br />establishment of vegetation with normal <br />practices <br />PURPOSE <br />• Stabuize areas with ewsting or expected <br />hiyh rates O( SOU erpSiOn by water <br />• Stabilize areas with existiny or expected <br />high rates of soil erosion by wind <br />• Restore degraded sites that cannot be <br />stabilized through normal methods <br />CONDITIONS WHERE PRACTICE APPLIES <br />This practice applies to areas with existing or <br />expected high rates of erosion, or degraded <br />sites that Woad stabibzation, If IeH untreated, <br />critical areas can be severely damaged by <br />erosion and sedimentation or cause significant <br />otf•sele damage. <br />Apply Critical Area Planting only on silos that <br />have the capability o1 supporting vegetation. <br />Soma cribral areas are so hostile to plant <br />growth, because of climate, soils or slope that <br />structural measures are raqu~red /Cr <br />stabilization, <br />CRITERIA <br />General Criteria Applicable to All Purposes <br />Species selected far seeding or planting shall ba <br />surfed to current ste ronddions anr. intended <br />uses Selected speces ~wll havo the capacity t0 <br />achieve adequate dorsdy and vigor vnthin an <br />appropriate time Irame to stabilize the site <br />sufficiently to permtl styled uses with ordinary <br />management activities. <br />Specify species selections, rates of seeding or <br />planting, minimum quality of planting slack such <br />as PLS or stem. caliper and method of <br />establishment before application. Usa only <br />viable, high quality sped or planting stock <br />Sde preparation and seeding or planting shall be <br />done at a time and manner that best ensures <br />survival and growth of the selected spec;es. <br />Specify successful establishment criteria such <br />as mimmum percent ground canopy cover, <br />percent survival and stand densely, etc., before <br />practice application. <br />Apply facilitating practices that enhance plant <br />growth such as tertihzation and mulching to <br />accelerate establishment of selected species. <br />Fertilizer and soli amendment application <br />methods, rates and liming shall be consistent <br />with the Colorado Nutrient Management 590 <br />Conservation Pradlce Standard <br />Do not establish state listed noxous weeds In <br />critical areas.
