Date (if no date stamp)
This letter is being written in response to your letter written 11-25-02 to Mr- Harry Posey
at the Division of Minerals and Geology (DMG) regarding our referenced amendment to
the Speer Mining Resource. I will also be copying this letter to the DMG.
'17re application to the DMG is for an amendment to an existing mining and reclamation
permit allowing sand and gravel mining. The existing permit and amendmen! both
corttcmplate final reclamation of the site into awater-storage reservoir. As suclt, the
primazy reclaimed purpose for the excavation will be as awater-storage reservoir, not
wildlife habitat. Wildlife habitat will occur as an ancillary feature to the reservoir with
shoreline edges established with wetlattd vegetation and the water surface serving as a
resting area for waterfowl.
We are currently mining the area lv the south and are required to abide by fire Urban
Drainage and Flood Control's (Ull&FCD) plan for river stabilization along the high
water bank of the South Platte River and the pit-side of the reservoir. All possible
attempts are being made to preserve the cottonwoods along the high-water bank of the
current permit area, while at the same time installing the required river•battk
improvements, and the same attempts will be made on the amendment area where there is
an existing startd of mature cottonwoods. Please refer to the cross-sections contained on
both the mine attd reclamation plans submitted to both the state and Adarns County.
Please also see the attached map provided by UD&FCD that shows the bank stabilization
pmjects along ibis stretch of the Platte River. Please note all the highlights: There are to
be many wildlife habitat improvement projects completed in this area resulting from sand
and gravel mining and donation of these properties to Adatns,County for the Regional
Park. Please note this information for your file on this amendment area and cm,tact me if
you have any further questions or concerns.
Sincere) ,
Rob Laird, Land Manager
