The site was visited on May 19, 1995 by Dr. Jesse
L. Craft, geologist of the Appalachian Regional Coordinating
Center (ARCC). In attendance were Mike Rosenthal, WRCC; Jim
Pendleton, Colorado Division of Minerals i Geology (DMG);
Larry Bennett, Basin Resources, Inc., Golden Eagle Mine; and
Carl Gerity, Pioneer Engineering.
Site Evaluation
The following observations were made during the field visit:
1. There is no visible damage to the garage, concrete
drive, walkway, and breezeway between the garage
and the house.
2. Separation cracks were observed around windows on
the south wall of the house. Most of the damage
was observed in the area of the two-story part of
the structure. The separation cracks all open
upward. Water damage, including an accumulation
of adobe mud, was observed in the upstairs room on
the southeast corner of the building. The south
wall in this room showed extensive water damage.
3. A rafter pole, extending out from the structure in
the porch area on the ground floor at the south
east corner of the structure, shows water damage
around the rafter pole--with the pole sinking into
the adobe brick.
4. A comparison between photographs of the Tatum
house from a book on the history of the area and
present-day conditions clearly shows that two
rafter poles on the top floor and three on the
first floor are no longer present. The missing
rafter poles were located over the center of the
windows on the top floor and over the center of
1
