Cottony
Acting Division Director
RE: Gold Hill Mill (Permit No. M-1994-117)
Response to Temporary Cessation Letter of October 10, 2002 (`TC-1)
Deaz Mr. Steen,
The Division of Minerals and Geology received your response to the Gold Hill Mill, M-1994-117 Temporary
Cessation Application on October 10, 2002. This letter was in response to the Division's adequacy letter of
December 30, 1999.
The Division has the following comments/suggestions before the Division can approve the Temporary Cessation
Application;
1. The operator states that ITEC will use the volume-depth curves from the 1998 tailings pond design to set the
limits of the tailings pond surface levels to insure that the pond has a safe freeboazd at all times. The operator
will need to specify the freeboazd that will be maintained and at what point the operator will need to consult
with the Division to reinstate the evaporation and land application procedures (this was a commitment as a
result of corrective actions for a violation). The Division recommends afour-foot freeboard in the tailings
pond at which the operator will need to consult with the Division to reinstate the evaporation and land
application procedures.
2. During the term of Temporary Cessation, the operator should commit [o inspecting the water level in [he
Hazel A on a monthly basis. A record of water levels will need to be maintained and available for inspection
by [he Division.
Please respond to these items by November 8, 2002. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact
me at 303-866-4943.
S c`erel
Erica Crosby
Environmental Protecn 'alist
cc: Carl Mount; DMG
Kate Pickford; DMG
