This brief letter report presents the results of an inspection of
the pit IY haul road landslide areas, performed to determine the stability of
previously mapped unstable areas adjacent to the road. Jerry Nettleton
determined that all fife originally affected slope segments appear to be
stable. Because of the possibility of drainage complications which might
result from rejuvenation, Jerry recommends buttressing of landslide areas 1
and 4, in addition to area 3, for wftich a remedial plan has already been
approved. I have also reviewed recent photographs taken by Cathy Begej of our
staff approximately contemporaneous with Mr. Nettleton's examination of the
site.
Jerry Nettleton's observations appear appropriate for the situation and I
recommend the approval of the coarse rock toe drain installation below slides
1 and 4. Because these installations involve only coarse rock material, they
can be completed during the winter months if minimal care is exercised.
Compaction is not possible for coarse rock material, so the usual freeze/thaw
concerns do not apply. I recommend, however, that you request the operator
submit a plan indicating the area to be affected, with a cross-section of the
proposed drains and a description of the rock material to be used in
fabricating the drains.
With this one condition, I believe that the applicant has rendered the
Grassy Gap pit IV haul road sufficiently stable to warrant approval of their
plan and to find it in compliance with the requirements of the "Agreement".
/ ern
cc: Cathy Begej
2569E
