Jane E. Bunin, PhD
October 21, 1996-Response
Page 5
effect on the Keewaydin Meadows area, the Division would
appreciate receiving that information.
It is the Division understanding that Western Mobile will be
submitting a revision for the Deepe Pit in the near future
concerning the modification of the currently approved drainage
system. The Division will certainly consider your concerns
during its review of the revision application.
Issue 3 - BOND REEVALUATION
Response
The Deepe Farm bond has been re-evaluated. The current bond is
$112, 114 . 00, the re-evaluated bond is $98 , 719 . 00 . Therefore the
bond is adequate.
The Turnpike Pit bond was re-evaluated on April 25 , 1994 and
found to be adequate. There has been no further activity at this
site since the re-evaluation we therefore believe the bond is
still acceptable.
Issue 4 GROUNDWATER MONITORING - NO DATA IN FILES?
Response
The Division' s letter of February 28, 1990 states that
"Conditions one and two (referring to the hydrologic survey
and implementation of a groundwater monitoring program) have been
satisfied with your responses dated December 5 , 1989 and January
25 , 1990 . " There was no requirement . for submitting this data .
The Division contacted Whitey Glasser, the Manager at the Deepe
Pit., on August 20, 1996 . He verified that the monitoring is
continuing and that the data is available at the mine office .
Issue 5 - WEEDS
Response
The Division contacted Western Mobile concerning the weeds . The
operator has a weed control program in effect , the inspectors on
the July 29 , 1996 and August 16 , 1996 inspections observed areas
where the weeds had been sprayed and are under control . The
operator plans to continue the weed control program. With the
presence of thistle and knapweed on adjacent areas it is very
difficult to totally eliminate these plants , however the operator
does have, and is implementing a weed control program.
