Gregg R. Squire
May 14, 1997
Page 2
ponds/lakes are identified by numbers 1-5 with#1 located at the north end of the Deepe Pit and
#5 at the south end of the pit, where the settling basins are located.
The Amended Reclamation Plan calls for reducing the amount of exposed water surface by
33.9 acres as follows:
Pond #1 -There is no change proposed for this existing 2.3 acre pond, which is located at the
north end of the Deepe Pit in Stage No. 1.
Pond#2 -This existing pond is located approximately 1000 feet south and slightly west of
Pond #1. The Amendment reduces this pond from 6.9 acres to its current size of 1.9 acres.
Pond #3 -This 15.5 acre pond was to be located east-southeast of Pond#2 in Stage No. 5.
The Amended Reclamation Plan calls for the elimination of this pond. Currently the area
that Pond #3 was to occupy has, for the most part, already been graded, topsoiled, and
seeded.
Pond #4 - Located in Stage No. 6 west of the former processing plant and stockpile area, this
7.1 acre pond will not be constructed under the Amended Reclamation Plan. This 7.1 acre
area will require backfilling, grading, topsoil, and seeding.
Pond #5 -This 6.5 acre pond was to be constructed at the north end of Stage No. 4. The
Amended Plan calls for the elimination of this pond; however, because Stage No. 4 was
used for the disposal of wash fines, no topsoil will be needed to reclaim the area of Pond
#5. The area will be reclaimed in a manner similar to the "Marshall Pit," which is located
immediately south of Stage No. 4.
Based on current reclamation conditions at the Deepe Farm Pit, the Amended Reclamation
Plan will require approximately 7 acres of previously planned water surface to be topsoiled and
seeded.
The total area of disturbance which has not yet been topsoiled includes the following areas:
• The former processing plant area, estimated to be 26 acres.
• Approximately 40 acres of Stage No. 6. This includes 7.1 acres associated with Pond
#4
Therefore, the estimated total area remaining to be topsoiled is approximately 66 acres.
The amount of stockpiled material available for use as topsoil is approximately 50,000
cubic yards, or 5.63 inches of topsoil over the 66 acres described above.
Regarding topsoil depths for reclamation, it is Western Mobile's understanding that the
construction materials rules do not require topsoil to be imported to a site if it was not present
originally. Enclosed with this letter is a blue line copy of the original "Excavation Plan Map"
