I
WEED CONTROL PLAN
Introduction
This document addresses issues related to weed control at the Deepe Farm aggregate
mining site operated by Western Mobile. Weed control at the Deepe Farm site will focus on
reclaimed areas.
Weed Species of Concern
The weed species of concern include both annual and perennial species which require
different strategies for control. The major species of concern include:
Scientific Name Common Name Distributional Growth Form
Status
Cirsium arvense Canada Thistle Introduced Perennial Forb
Cardana draba White Top Introduced Perennial Forb
Lepidium latifolium Perennial Peppergrass Introduced Perennial Forb
Convolvulus arvensis Field Bindweed Introduced Perennial Forb
Centaurea diffusa Diffuse Knapweed Introduced Annual Forb
Bromus tectorum Cheatgrass Introduced Annual Grass
Carduus nutans Nodding Bristle Thistle Introduced Biennial Forb
Sisymbrium altissimum Tumbling Hedge Mustard Introduced Annual Forb
Descurainia spp. Tansy Mustards Introduced Annual Forbs
Verbascum thapsus Common Mullein Introduced Biennial Forb
All of these species are adapted to disturbed conditions such as those that occur on
mining sites or agricultural lands. All of these species were introduced into the region at various
times beginning in the late 1800's and have expanded into a variety of habitats.
Weed Control Methods
Monitoring/Evaluating/Reoorting. Monitoring of weed populations is an integral part of
the weed control program. This work will consist of examining reclaimed areas and identifying
and mapping areas where weed control is needed. This information will be used to develop an
annual weed control plan that will describe whit needs to be done, where different types of
control will be implemented, when different control measures will be accomplished and how the
program will be conducted. Decisions on the annual program(based on site reconnaissance)will
be made in late spring in order to make sure that weed control plans can be developed.
Development of the plan will include input from company representatives,a plant ecologist, a
weed control specialist and an overall project manager. Additional site visits during the year may
be necessary to evaluate the success of the control measures and to prepare recommendations for
any late season weed control that may be necessary.
After each year of treatment, the success of the various programs will be evaluated. This
process will consist of examining the treatment areas as well as keeping records of what
treatments were applied in each area.
Herbicide Application. A wide range of herbicides is available for control of weed
species. For the Deepe Farm site, herbicide application will be used primarily for perennial£orb
