4) United Companies of Mesa County operates the Spring Creek Mesa Pit located in the same gravel
terrace deposit as the Halderson pit, only 2/3 mile from the northernmost area of the Haldorson Sand
and Gravel Mine. See Map B-2 -Surrounding Area for a detailed location. This permit has been in
place for years and is also near to irrigation occumng south and west of its mine. The mine has dug an
excavation of 30-35 feet and has never encountered any water. They also dug a large test pit with a
front end loader to a depth of an additional 25 feet and never encountered any water. The pit was dug
during the irrigation season attd later filled in. Therefore, the total depth of gravel without water
during irrigation for this site is 55-60 feet.
This was confirmed by David Ballode, who is a former employee of OldCastle (United Companies of
Mesa County) which operates the Spring Creek Pit. In his letter he states that they never encountered
groundwater to a depth of 40 feet. Ballode also states that the Metcalf Pit located east of the
Haldorson site, encountered groundwater at a depth of approximately 50 feet below the mesa top.
5) The Applehanz Base Products Pit is located immediately east of the United Spring Creek
operation. This pit is also operating in gravel of the upper terrace on Spring Creek Mesa. Excavation
at this site is more than 40 feet at its maximum and has also never encountered water to this depth.
This was confirmed by Chauncey Luttrel, who has worked at the Applehanz Pit and the old C.E. Mills
pit immediately east of the Phase A 1 area of this Amendment. Luttrel states that groundwater has
never been visible in the gravel pit face and that the groundwater follows the shale contact located
approximately 40-50 feet from the top of the pit.
6) The Western Gravel, Inc.'s North R-34 Pit is located on the lower terrace approximately %z mile
northeast of Phase A 1 of this Amendment. This pit was excavated to a depth of approximately 20
feet. No shale was encountered and the steady ground water level is approximately 6 to 7 feet from
the surface with little fluctuation from irrigation season to dry season. This is typical of a lower
terrace near the floodplain of a sizeable river on the west slope of Colorado.
Haldorson Sand and Gravel Mine 35
