Through the mining of the pit, groundwater is not expected to be encountered, so no pumping will
be necessary. If water is encountered during the mining of the pit, material will be brought back in
and will be backfilled to a level two feet above where the water was encountered.
3. Mitieation of Visual Impacts of Minin
Initially, approximately 10 acres of Phase 1 will be stripped of topsoil and overburden. This
material is approximately 4850 cubic yards. The material will be used to construct berms around the
perimeter of Phase 1, leaving one small opening for the haul road exit to 6175 Road. The berms will
be approximately 8 to 12 feet high with 3H:1 V slopes. Once the operation mines down to an
approximate depth of 40-47 feet, the visual impact to the surrounding area will be minimized. As
mining proceeds to the south, it will occur from the bottom so that the visual impact of the
operation will remain minimized.
An additional 10 acres will be mined where topsoil and overburden will be used to create berms on
the east and west sides of the permit area. This topsoil and overburden will be stripped with scrapers
and can be done in approximately 5 days. The shaping of the berm will require an additional 8 days.
Once this initia120 acres has been stripped of topsoil and overburden, mining will continue south
from the bottom of the pit. The only activity that will be visible is the subsequent removal of topsoil
and overburden. Since the annual production is 400,000 tons sold, an average mining depth of 34.5
feet will require that an average of 6 acres be stripped per year. This will be done with scrapers
making a loop from the stripping area to the pit itself, where it will be backfilled on the pit slopes to
create a 3H:1 V slope from the mined slope of 2H:1 V. This can be done by a team of two Cat 627
scrapers in approximately 5 days per year. Excess material will be used either to fill the bottom of
the pit or to create berms along the perimeter as shown on Map C-2. These berms will further
reduce noise to the surrounding areas.
Therefore, except for 5 days per year that topsoilloverburden stripping is being done, the operation
will not be visible; behind perimeter berms and approximately 40 feet lower than the surrounding
terrain.
Haldorson Sand and Gravel Mine 12
