Cells are then sealed nd air-line
hoses are securely fastened. Testing consists of a se n day cycle
which is repeated for a total of eight to ten weeks, epending on
client needs. Each weekly cycle starts by feeding d air to the
humidity cell for three days. Humidified air is thenlfed to each
cell on days four through six. On day seven, 200 mis ~f deionized
water is added to each cell and allowed to soak for o e hour.
After one hour, the sample leachate is drained into th collection
beaker. Sample leachates are 0.45um filtered and anal zed for pH,
conductivity, sulfate, iron and acidity. Additional arameters
can be analyzed, if requested, although sample leacha a volume is
a limiting factor.
OPERATING SPECIFICATIONS
An air flow rate of five to eight liters per minute isi maintained
through each cell during both dry and humidified air c cles. Hose
clamps are utilized to aid in equalizing flow rates. A roximately
110 to 15o mis of vaporized water pass through each c 11 during
the three day humidified air cycle. Ambient temperatu es range
from 60 to 80 degrees fahrenheit during testing. Samp a material
is left undisturbed for the duration of testing.
ANALYTICAL RE9ULT8
Analytical results for weekly sample leachates generated from each
humidity cell are reported using a standard format. I addition,
graphs of appropriate analytical results versus time (n rurally pH,
cumulative sulfate and cumulative acidity) are also re orted.
Kinetic testing used to predict acid mine drainage is a!relatively
new concept. Humidity cell testing is designed to measu~e the rate
of oxidation and weathering of various soils, rock and overburden
samples. The normal operating specifications described above can
be modified to best match a particular environment. ~}alytical
results can also be reported in a format which better ~deets the
needs of the project or client.
--era sesaws~-rerr rs::-v-vii-d~em+r.mw .w ee.r.r <-. a-c-s~ra :... -. ... ..,.u •. .. .. ..-%~!^m~ m.uw~^n cem,.a n•'r.
