Logan Wash Mine TR No. 4
plumbing system. The water is conveyed to the pond through approximately 7 miles of buried 6-
inch metal and plastic pipe. Manhole access vaults are spaced at approximately 600 yards
distances along the pipeline. Most of the manhole covers have been buried or overgrown and
cannot readily be located.
Pond lis lined with HDPE liner and includes an underlying leak-detection system that is
plumbed to an observation vault located on the west side of the pond. The lead-detection system
has not indicated pond leakage during the last decade.
Pond 1 was initially intended to be reclaimed in the case that a passive water treatment
technology was proven to be effective in treating the retort water on the OOSI mine property.
However, investigations into passive treatment technologies have not proven effective.
Therefore, OOSI intends to continue to treat the retort water by way of evaporation for an
indefinite period of time. There are no current plans to reclaim Pond 1.
It is conceivable that at some time in the distant future, retort water may be treatable by a passive
technology and Pond 1 will be reclaimed. In this case, reclamation of Pond I will involve the
collection and disposal of pond precipitate and removal of the pond liner materials. Precipitate
and liner will be disposed of in accordance with state regulations. All other surface plumbing
and related structures will be removed. The site will be regraded and revegetated in accordance
with BLM approval. Exposed manhole covers will be sealed, buried, and revegetated using a
BLM-approved seed mix.
During normal operation of Pond 1, OOSI will monitor flow to the pond at upstream and
downstream manhole locations. The pond will also be kept secure from public or wildlife
access. Manhole access-ways not part of the monitoring program will be sealed.
Current Status
Pond 1 is fully operational. There are no immediate plans to reclaim this structure.
Western Water & Land, Inc. 15
