Logan Wash Mine TR Mo. 4
their NPDES permit. In addition, discharged mine water may be used for irrigation purposes at
the mine site (to support revegetation efforts).
To further stabilize the portal earth plugs, the surface of the earth plugs will be revegetated as
part of the Research Bench revegetation effort in accordance with revegetation materials
described in Section 3.1.
Current Status
The Research Mine Portal was reclaimed as described above during the summer of 2003. The
monitoring program has been initiated.
6.2 Daylight Portal (Area 2)
The Daylight Portal, also known as the Upper Portal, accesses the upper levels of Logan Wash
Mine at an elevation of approximately 7,900 fr in the rock ledge immediately northeast of Area
2, the Upper Bench. The portal is approximately 15 ft high and 20 feet wide. A steel and
wooden canopy is constructed at the mouth of the portal. A grated and plate steel seal with
hinged doorway has been constructed approximately 75 fr in from the portal canopy,
The Daylight Portal has never discharged mine water. The drift associated with the portal, Drift
U-565 W, is dry. Despite the proximity of one of the largest seeps on the Mahogany Ledge rock
face in the Logan Wash Mine area (approximately 100 ft to the north), the portal area has seen
only occasional seepage from several fractures but not enough to result in standing water.
Pronosed Reclamation
The steel and wood canopy will be dismantled and disposed of inside the mine. Because the
Daylight Portal is dry and does not discharge mine water, the portal will be sealed with a 40 ft
thick earth plug. The earth material will consist of waste-rock material barrowed from the
northern portion of the Upper Bench and the small bench at the mouth of the portal. The earth
plug seal will extend to 3 ft above the elevation of the back (roof) of the portal and will also be
contoured to blend into the adjoining slope and rock outcrop.
The surface of the earth plug will be revegetated as part of the Upper Bench revegetation effort.
Current Status
The Daylight Portal was reclaimed as described above during the fall of 2003.
6.3 L-1 (Lower) Portal (Area 3)
The L-1 or Lower Portal is the largest portal at Logan Wash Mine and is collared on the Lower
Bench at an elevation of approximately 7,575 ft. The portal measures 23 ft high and 35 ft wide.
A steel plate door and grating currently secures the portal from unauthorized entry. The steel
door has been constructed approximately 35 feet into the rock face; no canopy is present. The L-
Western Water 8 Land, Inc. 13
