Ll \ EATIO~VS
A statament that the delinearion has been conduc#ed in accordance with the 1937
"Corps of Engineers l~'etlands 33elineation n~lanual."
Response: The wetland delineation on the proposed Hogue Gravel Pit expansion area
was completed using the standards feuna in the 1937 Corps nfT;ngineers lT etlrrnd Deli~reatiox
~Inisunl.
2. :1 narratise describing the wetlands.
Response: A map showing the location of all jurisdictional wetlands on the existing mine
and proposed mine expansion area are shown on Map 1, Hogue Gravel Pit -Wetland Map. This
map shows that there are 10 individual areas where jurisdictional waters of the United States
exist. Wetland Areas I through 5 are located in the proposed mitre expansion area. All of these
wetlands consist ofherbaceous wetlands. Wetland Area I is described by wetland sample plot
HP-17. This wetland area is located in the bottom of an old oxbow or river overflow channel
which has been danmied by irrigation ditches. This wetland area is dominated by Beaked Sedge
with Spreading Bentgrass being the subdominant species.
Wetland Area 2 also occupies an old oxbow and is dominated mostly by Sedges. Wetland
Sample Plots HP-3, HP-5, Hp-7, HP-11, HP-15 and HP-17 were sampled in this wetland area.
The dominant plant in this wetland area is as described for Wetland Area R one, except in some
areas where there is not as much moisture, Spreading Bentgrass is dominant. Wetland Areas 3, 4
and 5 are characterized by wetland sample plots HP-19, HP-24 and HP-23, respectivety. These
herbaceous wetland areas area also dominated by Sedges with a common understory of
Spreading Bentgrass.
Wetland Areas 6 and 7, are located outside of the proposed mine disturbance area and lie within
the river buffer area. These two small isolated wetland areas are dominated by Reed Canarygrass
and Sedges. Wetland Area 8, corresponds to the riverine wetland area adjacent to [he Yampa
River. These wetlands are characterized by wetland sample plots HP-25 and HP-39. These
wetlands differ from the herbaceous wetlands on this site in having a dominant overstory of
Geyer's and Narrowleaf Willow. Hawthorn is also a common species in this area. This wetland
area will not be disturbed by future mining activities. Wetland Area 10 is also a Willow
dominated wetland and is located in the northeastern portion of the property. This wetland area
has an understory of Reed Canarygrass and Sedges.
Justification for the wetlands boundaries.
Response: As are outlined on pages 65 and 67 of the 1987 bVetlnrul Delineation 11lannal
the upland-wetland boundary was determined at the point where the upland vegetation becomes
dominate.
d. The total acreage of the project site.
Response: The Hogue Gravel Pit site contains approximately 17.639'_ acres.
5. Existing field conditions such as season and flood;drought conditions.
