Wetlands
No designated wetlands noted on the site.
Reclamation procedures ~~~
Prior to excavation, the topsoil shall be removed at a depth of., and
stockpiled at a nearby site. This topsoil will be used after the mining operation is
complete for reclamation purposes. All vertical excavated areas and other steep slopes
shall be graded to 2:1 slopes or less and smoothed. Manure should be applied at a rate
of fifteen to twenty tons per acre, spread uniformly over the site and incorporated into
the top four inches of the surface layer. The manure should be of a type that has 60%
or more heavy chunks, 5 inches in diameter. After the manure is worked into the soil,
as prescribed, the grass seed can be drilled. The attached seeding recommendation
was developed as a critics! area planting. The species recommended are species that
are adapted to the specific site conditions and naturally occur on the Sandy Bottomland
ecological site. The grass should be drilled using a grass drill with 7-12 inch drill
spacing. The drill should be capable of mixing and drilling fluffy seed and have the
following; seed agitator, small seed box for heavy seed, double disc furrow openers with
depth bands, and packer wheels. Seed should be planted at a depth of/4 to'/4 inch.
To accurately maintain seeding depth, drilling speed should be less than 4.5 mph.
Grass seed should be drilled anytime after November 15` and before April 30`h.
After the grass has been drilled, mulch should be applied to the area to conserve
moisture, prevent soil crusting, and reduce soil erosion. The mulch material can be
grass hay or cereal grain straw (weed free) at a rate of 4,000 Ibs/ac air dry material
spread uniformly over the area. Crimping the mulch into the soil is desired and can be
accomplished with a disc plow by setting the disc straight and applying adequate weight
to crimp the straw four inches in depth. The reclaimed area should be fenced to protect
the area from livestock grazing until an adequate stand of grass is achieved. Stand
development can often take up to five years.
An additional benefit in reclaiming the site would be the development of wildlife
habitat. Native trees or shrubs can be incorporated into the reclamation plan to provide
additional cover and protection for native wildlife species. If desired, The Natural
Resources Conservation Service can provide technical assistance in designing any
additional wildlife considerations at the time of reclamation.
Si ere ,
~,
^~~-
la e H ndon
Acting District Conservationist
NRCS Akron Field Office
Cc: Cope Conservation District
