-'• .ENVIRONMENT. ANC.
.A0008T2~3; 2002 -
PAGE 3
feet long. It is a fairly uniform grade covered with some
soil and vegetation., .`This slope is topped by the 3 benches
that extend from the area above the eastern vertical wall.--
. .The ridge line separating this face from the front face has
a'vert';defined trail used by wildlife to traverse the area.
Attached is cross section sheet showing-the current profiles
of the three. slope areas shown on"the SOUTH HERM SLOPE MAP..
Section P.-A' is of the eastern face (blue); section B-B' is
of the central .area (yellow); and Section C-C' is of the
smaller west face (blue). At this time the bottoms of the
slopes end at an elevation that is higher than the finished
floor elevation will be when mining ends...
Part of the safety issue that needs to be addresses is the
final placement of a catch berm along the toe of this slope
to contain any rocks that might come off the face. At this
.time.a berm is-maintained along the eastern and western
.flanks of the slope, but due-to the limited area"in the
mine, there. is none along. central section.' Along the toe of
this area is where-the r-oad to ,access the upper levels of
the mine is located,, so it is not practical to maintain a
berm in this"location at this time. The existing berms are
shown as a`dashed red lines.
„ "' To 'address-the divisions concerns regarding .rock fall AFSI
w`11.maintain a catch berm along the toe of these slopes as
'mining progresses (as it now exists). As mining ends in the
' area adjacent to the.wall the catch berm will be extended to
cover-the eritire toe area. If mining-ended today it would
be necessary, to construct a 485 feet. long, 18 feet wide
rounded berm that is 6.5 feet high along the base of the
_ yellow area shown on the berm, map. This proposed berm is a
dashed green ,line: The width and :height was taken from the
sketch map prepared by Alan Sorenson in his memo. to Bob
.Oswald of 12/20/2001 (Call, 1986) for a 100 foot highwall.
'Eventually, as mining progresses across the mine and .the
floor is lowered to.its final elevation two benches will,be
left at the base of the eastern parts of the slopes. The
western section is already mined to its final elevation.
Cross section #9;depicts how we-think this will look under .
the eastern highwall. The bench width .and heights are based
on recommendation by Gorden Revey in his Geotechnical report
that is part of the application.- These benches would be
created as the floor is mined so no additional work would be
needed to reclaim Them"except to recoil and seed the flat
areas. The 40,' x:40' configuration avoids placing the toe .
of-the. vertical .faces a safe distance from the shear plane
associated. with the-rock on this face.
My site review showed that AFSI left the necessary safety
features on this face when it was mined and that instaila-
tion of a fence in that ,area would serve no purpose.
