MRR 09 '9H 14 58 RCGiHRGLER HRILLY ~ P.2
MEMORANDUM
TO: Harry Pouy
FROM: Ann¢ Maest ,~
DATE: 9 March 1993
SUBJECT: Analytical work at Core Labs
It is my understanding that we decided at the February 19,1993 meeting in Dt;trver to collect
samples for nitrate-nitrite but only have them analyzed if the sample had detbctable ryanide
concentrations. Nitrate-nitrite is an interferant in the ryanide analytical procedure. To do
this would involve having Core Labs rua the samples for cyanide before the 14day holding
time elapses, give me an interim report, then log-in and analyze the relev~ttt samples for
nitrate-nitrite -= all within the 28-day holding time required for nitrate-nitrit@. Because this
is out of the normal order of things (i.e., the report usually comes at the e>~d of the whole
analytical process), Core Labs will charge 5% of the total invoice to make this change in the
normal procedure. The total invoice is estimated to be "$1700; 5% of thig is $85.00. To
run the samples collected at the process points for nitrate-nitrite would ost $136.00 (8
samples x $17/sample). Whether or not the samples are run for nitrate-m e, the cost will
be at least $85.00. It seems to me that for a difference of only $51.00 it s more sense
to just run the samples nitrau-nitrite along with the other samples and 'not ask for an
interim report
On another topic, it turns out that Core Labs will only use our samples for the internal lab
CC check if we request it. In the interest of figuring out how well the lab is doing on its
cyanide determinations, !suggest that we ask the lab to use one of the process point
samples, preferably the collection pond sample, for the spike recovery~CC t$st. This would
cost an additional ~$ 5. I feel there is no need to use our sample fpr the internal
duplicate test, which uld cost an additional $155, because we collected field duplicates.
~o r'
Please advise me on how I should proceed on these two points as soon 8s possible. Tf
posstble, I would like to call Core labs back tomorrow with an answer so we don't run up
against the holding time for cyanide (the samples were delivered to the lab oq Friday, March
5th, and they must be analyzed for ryanide by next Friday, March 19th).
Thank you.
cc: Alana Scott
RCG/Hagler, Bai lly, Inc.
l o ` c~ a. ~ Z .~,~ er a.`l~„a-5
