Cattany
Division Director
Naturel Resource irustee
The-Division received Platte Sand & Gravel's adequacy response on August 2, 2004 for the S&H
Mine Amendment Application (AM-Ol), File Number M-2000-158. The Division of Minerals
and Geology (Division) is required to make an approval or denial recommendation no later than
August 13, 2004, therefore, your response to the following adequacy review concerns should be
submitted to the Division as soon as possible.
1. In the Division's adequacy letter dated July 8, 2004, the Division requested the following
information regarding the surface ditch or drain along the south side of Shazkey's Lake as
recommended by GEI Consultants, Inc.:
Please clarify if Platte Sand and Gravel intends to install a surface ditch or drain along
the south side of Sharkey's Lake as recommended by GEI Consultants, Inc. If so, please
locate such ditch/drain on the map and provide the applicable designs.
The applicant responded by stating that the temporary ditch location and design cross
section to the map was added to Exhibit C-lb. The ditch will divert the water to the west
so to carry overflow back to the aver. The Division was unable to locate the ditch that
diverts water to the west, back into the South Platte River. In addition, the cross section
of N-S depicts the ditch as natural drainage and ground water ditch. Please clarify this
discrepancy. In addition, please specify the dimension of the ditch in further detail.
2. The operator states that they intend to install the recharge ditch along the eastern mining
limits if needed for the unlined lake areas. Please be aware that installing this rechazge
structure for unlined lake areas is a stipulation of the initial permit approval:
Stipulation No. 1: The Applicant will install recharge structures between the point of
dewatering and any wells adjacent to the operation. Sufficient water being discharged
wall be directed to the recharge structures to protect adjacent wells and cottonwoods
while active dewatering is occurring.
Office of Office of Colorado
Mined Land Reclamation Active and Inactive Mines Geological Survey
