Colorado Department of Health June 9, 1983 Page 2 The attached results (Table 2) are for samples taken of the water which was pumped into Mann Draw. Sample A was taken from the pit prior to pumping, Sample B was taken below the discharge point as the pumping was started up, Sample C was taken after several hours of pumping, and Sample D was taken from the pit one week after pumping began. It should be noted that only total suspended solids exceeded effluent limitations and that those values decreased over time until they were within the specified limits. These results appear to be a direct result of the pumping method employed rather than a reflection of poor water quality. The fact that the suspended solids did not meet the effluent limitations, for a limited amount of time, is not expected to result in any adverse environmental impact, since the water was not discharged directly into a stream. All other tested parameters were within specified limits and, thus, should also not have any adverse effects. , Steps have been, and will continue to be taken to prevent recurrence of this type of discharge. Water is presently being pumped into sedimentation pond C where it will be allowed to settle before being discharged into Mar1n Draw. The leak in pond B will be repaired as scbn a~ weather conditions permit the use of equipment to complete that pi~~ject. Walden Coal Company believes that the bypass was nec~,ssary to meet the unexpected conditions, but will continue to do e~~°rything in its power to avoid similar discharges.
