Hazeltine/Road Runners Rest II/Brinkmann-Woodward Gravel Pits Lining Project -Design Technical Memorandum
Denver Water
August 2003
foot-wide vertical zone of soft material located within the cross section. A surcharge loading
of 200 pounds per square foot (psf) was used to model construction loading. The idealized
representative cross sections are shown on Figures 3.3 and 3.4.
TABLE 3.1
REPRESENTATIVE CROSS SECTIONS AND APPLICABLE STATIONING
Representative Cross Section A proximate Startin and Endin Stations
35-foot-hi h Section 0+00 to 86+00
55-foot-hi h Section 86+00 to 130+00
35-foot-hi hSection 130+00 to 148+00
3.4 Material Properties for Stability Analyses
Material properties, such as moist and saturated unit weights and shear strengths for different
soil types were estimated based on: 1) results from laboratory tests (GEI, 2000), 2) published
empirical correlations between material type and SPT blowcounts and soil shear strength, and
3) our experience in geotechnical engineering. Material properties used in the slope stability
analyses are summarized in Table 3.2. The material properties are similar to those used in
GEI's previous slope stability evaluation for the western portion of the reservoir (GEI, 2001 a).
TABLE 3.2
SUMMARY OF MATERIAL PROPERTIES FOR SLOPE STABILITY ANALYSIS
Drained Stren th
Material Moist Unit Weight
(pct) Saturated Unit Weight
(pcf) Cohesion
s Friction Angle
de rees
Overburden 120 125 0 30
Sand and Gravel 123 125 0 35
Soil-Bentonite Cutoff wall 115 120 0 15
Stabilization Fill 123 125 0 28
Bedrock 130 135 1000 30
3.5 Water Pressures
Water pressures were estimated for two steady state seepage conditions as follows:
• Full reservoir:
o Reservoir at normal pool.
o Water level in the South Platte River at El. 5013.
o Water surface outside of the pit in areas not along the South Platte River at 8 feet
below existing ground surface.
GE[ Consultants, ]nc. 10 030HU U?-01-?I id-Hazehine Dalgn i\1
