•
Mined Land Reclamation Board
Department of :latural ?resources
1313 Sherman fit. :215
Denver, C~ 80233-2273
Dear Gentlemen:
D•. 5, 1gS9

DEC 8 1989
raR~En LRi~:;.)
I~~~I.R3tP.TlOl~ JI'J:!^fOF~
P.s a citizen of San Fa)-1o, CO in the county of Ccstilla,
I am o?posed to the issuance of a mining permit to Battle ~4ountain
Gold Company. It is imperative that the P4ined Laird Reclamation
Board schedule a pul;lic hearing in San Luis in regards to
Battle "^.ountain Gold "^.ine Company's revised mining plan.
Many citizens are unai•~are of the implications that a minine~
company would have in the area. Others are very much ac,•are
that this type of industry is more of a detriment than an asset
to our community. The citizens of Costilla County have a right
to know and voice concerns over the proposed plan.
A1any concerns include the tearing away at a beautiful mountain
that is located only 3 miles from toe•n and school. The quality
of life and the serene beauty that brings people into our area
rill be destroyed 4~ith pollution, dust and noise, not to menti.or.
the endangerment of wildlife, possiYle pollution of the water
with cyanide, and damage to the R.ito Seco and its environment.
The loss of traditional water rights is a major concern to the
people of this community.
San Luis is a rare find, the natural and historical treasures
of the Valley have been preserved anc4 left unchanged for gener-
ations. The economic development e` the area has been re-
vitalized ~•±ithin the last fet-~ years by clean, productive
methods. This minim plan is on the contrary a detriment to
the community despite their claims of k?eina "good neighbors".
Please take into consideration the effects this company will
have on the community of San Luis and its neighboring towns.
You very well know the history of the hazards this type of
industry generates. Cannot one area of this state be preserved
for future generations? This decision will affect the gerer-
ations to come within the entire state, not only Costilla
County. Think aYout it - would you approve a mining company
in your back yard?
Sincerely,
~~~~~
Dana Maestas
