NORTH BANK PIT WEED CONTROL PLAN
Introduction
This document addresses issues related to weed control at the future North Bank
aggregate mining site. Weed control is an issue associated with lands in all stages of the
mining process including lands occurring within the permit area that will not be mined,
lands that have not yet been mined, disturbed azeas that are not yet reclaimed or aze part
of the operations site, and lands that have been reclaimed. Each of these pariculaz azeas
presents different weed control challenges. The azeas that will not be mined contain
primarily perennial weed species that became established on the site during the years
when the land was primarily used for agricultural purposes.
Generally, the primary approach for controlling the weeds in these areas will be
through the application of herbicides or a combination of mechanical and chemical
methods. Control of many of the weeds in undisturbed azeas, disturbed azeas, operations
azeas, product stockpiles, and topsoil stockpiles will be accomplished through herbicide
application at the times when particular weed species will be most susceptible to
treatment. A single treatment will not be sufficient, and ongoing herbicide application
will be necessary and will be completed to significantly reduce and eliminate the weed
populations. For other weed species, mowing immediately followed by an herbicide
application will be used. Again, a single treatment will not be sufficient and mowing with
follow-up herbicide application will need to be repeated. A more detailed description of
the weed treatment method is described in the following section.
Weed Species of Concern
Typically, the weed species of concern include some or all of the following species:
Table 1.

Scientific Name
Common Name Distributional
Status
Growth Form
Cirsium arvense Canada Thistle Introduced Perennial Forb
Cardaria drabs Whiteto Ihtrotiuced Perennial Forb
Le idium latifolium Perennial Pe er rass Introduced Perennial Forb
Convolvulus arvensis Field Bindweed Introduced Perennial Forb
Centaurea diffusa Diffuse Kna weed Introduced Annual Forb
Carduus nutans Noddin Bristle Thistle Introduced Biennial Forb
Sisymbrium
altissimum Tumbling Hedge
Mustard
Introduced
Annual Forb
Descurainia s Tans Mustards Introduced Annual Forb
Verbascum tha sus Common Mullein Introduced Biennial Farb

Tamaris ramosissima
Tamarisk
Introduced Deciduous
Shrub
Elaeagnus
an ustifolia
Russian Olive
lntroduced Deciduous
Shrub
Centaurea re ens L.
