MMUOEMElR
RECEIVED
NOV ig 1991
Diwaion of Minerab 8 Geology
This letter is written to notify the DMG of slide activity near the Bear No. 3 mine in
accordance with the requirements of Rule 4.12(2). The slide is located immediately west
of the reclaimed Bear No. 3 Mine portals. The slide bepme active on Saturday,
November 15°i. Debris from the slide is flowing onto the old coal stockpile pad (west of the
the reclaimed stacking tube) and into fhe North Fork of fhe Gunnison River below the mine
access bridge. Today water was noted flawing from the east slide scarp.
The following paragraph is taken from my letter to fhe OMG dated July 15, 1977 regarding
MCC's proposed TRIO, page 3.
"MCC states (See 2.05-247) that it "recognizes the potential implications of
contributing water into a known slide area'. MCC states that it is 'not..
feasible to assess... how the potential seepage from these workings has
impaled slide~rone areas'. MCC acknowledges that flows from its NW
sump will be introduced to the Edwards Mine. The Edwards Mine portals are
located in an active, recent slide area. Other slides will likely occur on lands
controlled by other entities, incuding Bear. MCC should offer a mitigation
plan for fhe future slides that will occur due to this additional ground water.'
About 1:30 p.m. an November 17" Basil Bear took field parameters on the water seeping
from the slide scarp as follows:
pH Conductivity Temp
7.8 4600 umhos/cm 24°C
