Camilletti Pit, Permit No. M-1987-164
rffopsoil Balance
Dear Mr. Morrissey,
COLORADO
DIVISION O F
MIN SRALS
GEOLOGY
0.E ClAMATIO N•MINING
SAFETY•SCIEN<E
Bill Owens
Governor
Russell George
Executive Director
Ronald W. Cattany
Division Director
Natural Resource Trustee
The Division received yoty letter dated March 15, 2005 regarding the topsoil shortage at the Camilletti
Pit, Permit No. M-1987-164.
In your letter it is stated that the remaining areas to be stripped and mined is approximately 8.6 acres.
Using 24" of topsoil thickness over the 8.6 acres of future stripping produces approximately 26,000 CY.
This infers that 24" of topsoil is available on site to be stripped. According to the 112 Permit
Conversion Application dated July 3, 2000, only 6"of topsoil is available for salvage. The permit states,
"recent exploration test pits in the southern expansion area indicate an average topsoil thickness of six
inches...this is consistent with the original 1987 SCS soil investigation and historic mining in the pit "
A copy of the mining plan is attached.
The operator will need to further demonstrate that the additional 18" of material to be stripped in the
undisturbed area is adequate for topsoil redistribution and revegetation of the site. Such demonstration
may include a standard soil analysis showing pH, SAR, fertility and texture of the B-horizon. Fertilizer
or other soil amendments may be required as a result of the soil tests. Any changes or amendments to
the soil will need to be filed as a technical revision to the permit.
The Division's correction action due date noted in the inspection report is June 1, 2005. Please address
this issue prior to this date. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call.
Sinc , ^
` V Vvv
rica Crosby
v ~~
Environmental Protection Specialist
Enclosure; Mining Plan
/cc: Carl Mount; DMG
Office of
Mined Land Reclamation
Office of
Active and Inactive Mines
Colorado
Geological Survey
