• In 1996, Henderson constructed a water treatment facility at the site of the
historic Urad Mine in the Wood Creek Valley to collect, consolidate, and treat
water from both the active underground mine and the defunct Urad Mine.
Henderson determined that an alkaline precipitation system producing High
Density Sludge (HDS; 25 % solids or greater) would meet the revised effluent
limitations of their CPDES discharge permit. This treatment facility was
commissioned in 1997, and has been successfully treating this mine water since
start-up.
This proposed TR to the Permit seeks to attain approval from the DMG to
dispose of the dewatered HDS produced in the water treatment process in Pond
1.2 at the Henderson Mine site. The TR discusses characterization of the HDS,
the adequacy of Pond 1.2 to safely store the HDS, flood control and
management issues, and a final cover design and surface reclamation of Pond
• 1.2.
This TR meets the required information submittals of the Minerals Rules and
Regulations of the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board (Rules) and
includes discussions that respond to the issues presented in a memo to
Henderson (Ms. Anne Beierle) from Mr. Allen C. Sorenson of the DMG dated
November 19, 1998, A copy of this memo is provided in Appendix A.
2.0 THE TECHNICAL REVISION
A Designated Mining Operation (DMO) is defined by Rule 1.1 (14) as a mining
operation at which: 1) designated chemicals used in the metallurgical
processing are present on-site; or, 2) toxic or acid-forming materials will be
exposed or disturbed as a result of mining operations; or, 3) acid mine drainage
• pEgrr
2
JUro 23.1999
TR.mc
