BOWIE RESOURCES LIMITED -BOWIE NO. 1 MINE
WEST MINE SEDIMENT POND
CERTIFICATION
On February 4, 1987, Matthew S. Sakurada, PE, certified the West Mine Pond. Mr. Sakurada's
certification statement indicates the design of the pond was completed by Graeme Major, P.E.
of Golder Associates. Calculations were completed by Graeme Major on the stability, spillway
capacity and volume of the dam as required by CMLRD rules.
Reclamation of the west mine commenced during the 4`"quarter 2000. A contractor has been
pushing material from the west mine fill up into the portal cut. Sometime during the first quarter
2001, the contractor pushed some material into the west mine sediment pond. During a
routine inspection of the west mine, the DMG noticed the problem with the sediment pond.
On March 6, 2001, the DMG issued a Notice of Violation to Bowie Resources Limited for failure
to maintain the west portal sedimentation pond in accordance with designs that are approved
and required to assure adequate capacity. Abatement steps were to excavate the east side of
the pond to design specifications and re-certify the sediment pond as-built and submit a re-
certification statement to the Division.
Volume 6 of the permit (C-81-038) contains a design drawing for the west mine pond. It is a
Golder Associates drawing, Runoff Diversions, Sedimentation Pond, Sheet Number 6 of 10.
No specific design capacity was located in the permit. Therefore, the pond's design capacity
was calculated from the pond drawing, sheet 6 of 10. The as-built capacity was calculated from
a survey of the pond performed by Cragg Surveying on March 16, 2001. The pond design and
as-built capacities are as follows:
West Mine Sediment Pond
Design As-Built
Sediment A-F 0.8 1.0
Water A-F 0.3 0.3
Total A-F 1.1 1.3
I hereby certify that to the best of my knowledge and belief, the west mine sediment pond has
been restored to~Lsor~ al design capacity. An as-built drawing of the pond and four pictures
are attachedl~lb _r6i~i~.Gertification statement.
:~19 ~ 3 ZZ o1
';James E.
