pEa o~Y III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
~~~~~ Peabody Weatern Coal Company
October 13, 1993
Ms. Susan Burgmaier
Division of Minerals and Geology ,7_,,~
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
RE: Seneca II-W, C-82-057, NOV No. C-93-135 ~Cr 22 ~99~'
--
Dear Ms. Burgmaier: - -
The attached information is being submitted to comply with Step
No. 2 of NOV C-93-135. This step called for a plan to be
submitted to minimize erosion and siltation from the haul road.
Tab 13, Page 19 of the permit application lists a number of
measures that could be used to minimize erosion and siltation
from haulage roads. In this particular case, PWCC will employ
the use of straw dikes to prevent sedimentation from being
discharged onto unpermitted areas. The attached information was
taken from the "Handbook of Alternative Sediment Control
Methodologies for Mined Lands", March 1985, by the Mining and
Reclamation Council of America. According to information
submitted in the permit application, discharge from Culvert A-3
as a result of the 10-year, 24-hour precipitation event is 12.68
cfs. This number was based on a conservative curve number of
80. Actual runoff is probably somewhat less and thus the
installation of straw bales on the downstream end of Culvert A-3
will be conducted to correct the problem. This area will be
periodically inspected to ensure the straw bales are acting
effectively. If it is determined the bales are not effective,
other means will be employed such as silt fence, rock check
dams, or sumps.
Should you have any questions regarding the above, please
contact me.
Sincerely,
Thomas-J.
