Cooley Sand and Gravel , continued page 3
be anchored. One method is to use a straw crimper and "crimp " the
mulch into the soil . This should help to control erosion until the
grass becomes established. See attached SCS standards and
specifications for MuLching.
5) Fertilizer: A soil test should he taken. to determine fertilizer
recommendations before seeding grass. Fertilizer should be applied
prior to or during seeding and should be mixed into the soil .
6 ) Grass Seeding: Grass seeding should be done between November 1
and May 1 . Seeding should not be done on frozen soil . The seedbed
should be firm and weed free . After the land is seeded to grass , it
should be covered with mulch. Double the rates , listed below, for
broadcast seeding.
The following is a seeding recommendation .
PLS
Grasses % of Mix Per Acre
Western wheatgrass , Barton 20% 3 . 2
Streambank wheatgrass , Sodar 10% 1 . 1
Slender wheatgrass , common 10% 1 . 1
Switchgrass , Blackwell 10% 0 . 5
Little 'oluestem, ?astura 10% 0 . 7
Slue grama , Lovinston 20% 0 . 6
Sideoata grama , Vaughn 10% 0 . '%
Cicer Milk vetch , Monarch 10% 1 . 3
Total Pure Live Seed (PLS) per Acre ? y
Stockpiled topsoil ( when it will be stockpiled over two years) should
be seeded to Fairway 'Wheatgrass at the rate of 6 pounds per acre pure
Live seed. This rate is 'or a grass seed drill . For broadcast
seeding, seeding rates should be doubled. Grass should be planted
using a grass 'seed drill with agitators in the drill box , double disc
with depth bands and packer wheels. Ninety-rive percent of the seed
should me planted at a depth of 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch. When stockpiled
topsoil for 6 months to 2 years , then an annual crop , such as wheat or
forage sorghum should be seeded for erosion protection . Short term
stockpiled topsoil could be protected with a mulch.
7) Weed Control : Weed control is necessary to insure a successful
seeding. Weeds can be controlled by mowing or spraying chemicals.
Mow weeds when they are 6 to 8 inches high , leaving a 3 to d inch
stubble. Do not clip off the too of the newly seeded grass. Mowing
should be done for at least two growing seasons . After the seeded
plants have reached the four leaf stage , then appropriate herbicides
may be used to control weeds. Any chemicals used will need to be used
according to manufacturer 's labeling.
8 ) Grazing: The area should be protected and grazing should be
prohibited until the grass has become established.
Page 4, EXHIBIT I-1 S J-1
