~LAFARG E /
NORTH AMERICA
Construction Materials
May 5, 2003
RECEIVED
MAY 0 6 2003 ~
Uiuision •f Minerals and Geology
Division of Minerals and Geology
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman Street, Rm 215
Denver, CO 80203
Re: Penrose Pit, M-1987-131, Technical Revision Request
Deaz Sir.
Summary:
~- ~ /
Lafazge West Inc. (Lafazge) has operated the Penrose Pit (also known as the Airport Pit) following
a sublease agreement executed between Lafarge and Monks Concrete Company, L.L.C. (Monks)
in August 1997. The Penrose Pit was actively mined by Monks from 1987 to 1997, whereupon
the majority of the mined acres were affected. Lafarge began mining operations in 1997 and
terminated activities in 2000. Lafazge's mining activities have been conducted exclusively in
Mine Phase III of the 1996 Airport Pit MLRB permit amendment.
Lafarge would like to continue its practice of concurrent reclamation following mining activities,
however, due to the change in geologic conditions encountered; Lafarge is requesting a technical
revision for Mine Phase III prior to the start of reclamation activities.
During Lafarge's time of mining, Lafarge disturbed approximately 35 acres within Mine Phase III.
A Site Vicinity map is included as Exhibit A. The proposed reclamation contours overlain on the
previous Reclamation Plan Map form the 1996 permit amendment, Exhibit F, is provided as
Exhibit B.
Change in Conditions:
Lafarge and Monks agreed that Lafarge should be required to reclaim azeas where Lafarge
conducted the mining operations. However, due to the early tennination of mining activities and
geologic conditions encountered, the final grade and contours described in the 1996 MLRB permit
amendment cannot be Followed.
Western U.S, Region
1400 W. 64th Ave., P.O.
