This letter is to follow-up on a
phone call to Genny Torrey, May 16, 1986.
During an inspection of Snowmass Coal Company's Thompson Creek #1 Mine
May 6, measurable inflows were noted coming from old workings in the
B-seam. (These inflows caused noncompliant discharge in May, 1985, as
noted in a letter addressed to Genny Torrey May 20, 1985.) These
initial flows were calculated to be 3t fpm. The decision was made to
mix this water with other mine water to be discharged through outfall
001. It was hoped that the low flow compared to last year could be
diluted adequately for discharge compliance. The mix caused non-
compliance in discharge May ~ with a pH of 5.8 and a total iron of
13.9 mg/L. A sample May 12 showed a pH of 5.2 and a total iron of
195 mg/L. On May 14, the pH was 5.5. Since compliant discharge was
not possible, the B-seam inflows were diverted May 14 to an inactive
portion of the mine being allowed to flood. This inactive area is
estimated to be able to handle the B-seam flow for'tw~ (2) to four (4)
weeks. Once the inactive area is full, the flowJwill be diverted to
the lower'wash plant sediment pond. We anticipate the flow to quit
before filling this sediment pond and discharging through outfall 003.
Since diverting the B-seam water into the inactive area, the pH of
the 001 discharge increased to 6.9 May 15 and 6.6 May 16. Lab infor-
mation is not available yet on samples taken May 14 and 16 to determine
total iron. Compliance is expected within a week on total iron dis-
charge.
