Midway soils aze on ridge crests, mesas, plains, and hills in shale <br />bedrock uplands. Slopes range from 0 to 40 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 13 inches and <br />mean annual air temperature is about 50 degrees F. <br />TAXONOMIC CLASS: Clayey, smectitic, calcareous, mesic, shallow Ustic Torriorthents <br />TYPICAL PEDON: Midway clay -grassland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted) <br />A--O to 3 inches; light brownish gray (2.SY 6/2) clay, dark grayish brown (2.SY 4/2) moist; moderate <br />very fine granular structure; hard, friable, strongly effervescent; slightly alkaline; clear smooth <br />boundary. (3 to 8 inches thick) <br />C--3 to 12 inches; light yellowish brown (2.SY 6/4) clay, light olive brown (2.SY S/4) moist; weak fine <br />subangular blocky structure; hard, firm; strongly effervescent; few, fine, and medium clusters of <br />gypsum; moderately alkaline; cleaz smooth boundary. (7 to 12 inches thick) <br />Cr--12 to 24 inches; light yellowish brown (2.SY 6/4) partially weathered, platy, clay shale, light olive <br />brown (2.SY 5/4) moist; massive; hard, very fine; sVongly effervescent; few fine nests of gypsum; <br />strongly alkaline. <br />TYPE LOCATION: Boulder County, Colorado; about 2 miles northwest ofNiwot, Colorado; 1,220 <br />feet south and 400 feet east of center of Sec. 14, T. 2 N., R. 70 W. <br />RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: <br />Midway soils are usually dry unless irrigated. <br />Mean annual soil temperature ranges from 47 to 52 degrees F. <br />Depth to paralithic contact: 10 to 20 inches, but is as shallow as 6 inches in some pedons. <br />Gravel and channery size shale pazafragments above the Cr horizon range from 0 to 80 percent. <br />A horizon: <br />Hue: SY to l OYR <br />Value: 4 to 6 dry, 3 to 5 moist <br />Chroma: 2 to 4 <br />Texture: clay or clay loam <br />Reaction: neutral to moderately alkaline <br />C horizon: (AC is present in some pedons) <br />Hue: SY to l OYR <br />Value: 5 or 6 dry, <br />http://ortho.ftw.nres.usda.gov/cgi-bin/osd/osdname.cgi?-P 4/29/2004 <br />
