Lung
D it icon Direr br
Report: Third Party Monit_o_ri g of Battle
San Luis Gold Mine, San I,ui, Colorado,
Ann Maest, RCG/Hagler Bailly
Transmitted herewith is the Summary Report for the October 12-13, 1993
sampling trig for third party monitoring. This report wa revised in
response to questions raised by the Division. A response 1 tter, which
is expected from Core Laba, will be forwarded as soo as it is
received.
The report identifies several problems with Core Labs ana yses of BMG
samples. I strongly recommend that BMG evaluate the comet nts made by
Dr. Maest in light of work that this lab is currently co ducting for
BMG. The violation of holding times is a fairly seriou breach of
proper lab procedure, and should have been corrected by hanging the
lab procedures after the first breach was discovered. Aspanalysis of
samples after the recommended holding times ordinarily resu is in lower
values, the Division cannot accept such analyses for urposes of
demonstrating compliance with permit standards. Because he analyses
in question were not compliance samples, the Division mus accept the
results, as given.
Following up on Dr. Maest's letter, I am recommending to arry Oehler
and Jim Stevens by way of this letter that BMG sample well M-9 every
two weeks over the next two months (total of four analyse ), and that
samples be analyzed by a lab other than Core Labs, ar~d that the
analyses be sent to the Division, along with the labs Quagity Control
Report, for Division review and comment. Given the estionable
analyses, and the frequency with which the same mistake as made, I
believe it is appropriate for BMG to assure the Division t at adequate
measures have been taken to assure that nothing has ntered the
groundwater in the vicinity of well M-9. BMG should res and to Mr.
Oehler regarding this suggestion in the very near fut re with a
schedule and a laboratory selection.
