L. P., C-81-019
Dear Ms Crosby:
May 9, 1995
Attached, please find a report from Mr. Mark Gray of CTL/Thompson, Inc. concerning
the landslide in the vicinity of the West Pit Pond.
In requesting CTL/Thompson to visit the pond we were primarily concerned with three
items; 11 the cause or causes of the slide, 21 the stability of the West Pit Pond embankment
and 31 recommended measures to repair the slide,
11 The cause or causes of the slide - Mr. Gray believes the primary factor which
initiated the slide was seepage of water from the south. Further, he believes it is possible the
landslide could have occurred without the presence of the topsoil stockpile.
2) Stability of the West Pit Pond Embankment -Our primary concern is for the integrity
of the pond embankment. If a failure was imminent, we wanted to be proactive and correct
any potential problems with the embankment before any problems developed. With that in
mind, Mr. Gray was asked to evaluate the integrity of the pond. In Mr. Gray's opinion the
stability of the embankment has not been reduced by the slide. We continue to monitor the
situation as required.
31 Repair measures - Mr. Gray has recommended that a french drain (similar in
configuration to the lateral subdrains successfully installed under the West Pit Fill) be installed
in the side of the pond to drain the water. Colowyo plans to construct such a lateral drain as
soon as conditions permit access to the site and the topsoil can first be removed.
Please contact me if you have any questions concerning this matter.
Si cerely, /~ ~~
Ja e~s~AAKiger `
S .Environmental Specialist
Attachment
xc: R.G.Atkinson
Files
An alfil~iate of Kennecott Energy
and Coal Company
