PLANT DAMAGE APPRAISAL
June 2004
Summary
Three naturally growing Douglas-fr trees have been exposed to possible loss through the
removal of rock material in a road cut. Without remedial action, these three trees will
likely succumb to the forces of erosion from the sloughing or raveling of the disturbed
cut slope. The three trees can be saved by the stabilization of the cut slope to its original
contour and the reestablishment ofsoil cover over the roots.
Through a tree appraisal process, I have determined the value of the three trees to be
$5000.
Background:
Norma Baker, Lake City, Colorado, contacted me May 5, 2004. She requested a damage
appraisal for trees along her property where the City of Lake City had excavated shale-
like rock from a road cut along the property. She stated roots from the trees on the slope
were now exposed. Specifically requested was an estimate of the damage and what, if
any, action could be taken to save the trees.
Location and Ownership:
The property address is 342 Morningside Drive, Lake City, Colorado. The legal
description is not exactly known. It is on lots 42 and possible 43 in a subdivision of
Hinsdale County, T 44N, R4W, NMPM. Owners are Eugene and Norma Baker.
Physical Description:
The property and site with the damage is located in the Douglas-fir/ponderosa pine
vegetative type at an elevation of 8900 feet. It has a western aspect and a slope of 30-
50%. Large trees had been cut and removed from the area in the early part of the 1900s
The area has regenerated into amulti-aged stand of trees primarily Douglas-fir with a
scattering of ponderosa pine. Other associated plants common to this type and found on
the area are aspen, common juniper, and serviceberry.
Water Street is along the west boundary of the property and was constructed to access
properties on the east side of the Lake Fork of Gunnison River. It was constructed to
accepted road standards. The street goes south from a flat area just east of Lake City. It
