STATE OF COLORADO
Bill Owens, Governor
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
DIVISION OF WILDLIFE
AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER
Bruce McCloskey, Director
soso Broadway
Denier, Colorado 80216
Telephone: (303)297-1192
Feb. 1, 2005
To: Mr. R.T. Box 19754
Boulder, CO 80308
Re: Cash-WhoDo Mine Permit Area, Gold Hill
Deaz Mr. Heazd,
For llrldlife-
ForPeople
Thank you for the opportunity to comment on potential wildlife issues in the Cash-WhoDo Mines Permit Area,
neaz Gold Hill, Boulder County, Colorado.
Gold and silver are currently mined in tlris area, and the creation of a crosscut tunnel is being proposed This
tunnel will be 425 feet long and will join in with an existing tunnel This proposal would result in the removal of
most trees within the three acre project site. This site will be reclaimed after mining is completed.
District Wildlife Manager Claire Solohub toured this site in September of 2004. The dominant tree species are
ponderosa pine, Engehnann spruce, blue spruce, and fu. There are no wetlands or riparian areas in the proposed
project area.
The Division of Wildlife recommends that excavation and tree removal be avoided between the months of April
and August to minimize disruption to ground and tree nesting birds. We also recommend sealing mine shafts when
not immediately in use to prevent wildlife such as deer from falling in.
If you have further questions, please contact Clave Solohub at (303) 828-2591.
Sincerely,
-t^/
Scott Hoover,
Northeast Regional Manager
Colorado Division of Wildlife
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Russell George, Fxeafive Director
WILDLIFE COMMISSION, Ph~p James, Chair.
