I
have visited the site this afternoon, and have these thoughts to shaze.
The Division of Wildlife is not opposed to the application. In fact, we view the amendment as being a
positive aspect to the reclamation of the North pit. Open water lakes and ponds are by no means limiting
in this part of the state, and reclamation to a vegetated wetland habitat type is a valuable addition to the
landscape. We do encourage, however, consideration of a few simple suggestions.
We feel that slopes that are 3:1 aze too steep to provide much benefit to wildlife habitat. Instead, we
encourage much shallower slopes, on the range of 10:1. Creating an undulating shoreline will inherently
-add divezsity to the constrilcted halSifat~ which is a beneTcia3 aspect.-CieaCtng-shallow wafer habitat far
into the reclaimed pond is also beneficial. This will create habitat for aquatic insects, which in turn will
attract a different community ofmigrating wildlife to the area. This shallow water azea should extend
approximately 25 feet into the pond from the shoreline. Building small islands in the pond will create
refuge for a variety of wildlife, as well.
If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at 970-295-5657.
S~jacer ,
~..
Eric Odell
Habitat Biologist
Colorado Division of Wildlife
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Greg E.
