SUMMARY OF CONSTRUCTION
General
The following sections provide a summary of the project construction, problems
encountered and resolution of those problems, and a summary of construction material
tests. Selected project photographs are included in the back of this document. Other
photos, too numerous to be included directly with this report, are available upon request.
Discharge Vault
The project construction started in July 2003, with the excavation for the new
Discharge Vault, located at the end of the new Storke pipeline in the general vicinity of
the Scale ..House near the Mine entrance. The initial excavation revealed that the
location planned was too close to some buried mine water piping that would interfere
with the vault's construction. It was decided to move the vault approximately 15 feet to
the south :of the original location. Excavation at the new location proceeded without
further problems. The vault was constructed in stages, beginning with the floor. Some
of the repays installed in the wall forms were closer (3 inches .min.) to the.;forms.than_
allowed by the specifications. Because of this, it was decided that both the;interior:and :.. - ; . :. .
exterior of the vault walls should be coated with Sonneborne HLM 5000, an elastomeric
waterproofing membrane system. This material will seal the concrete and add corrosion
protection to the vault rebar.
The concrete for the vault walls had problems with its delivery, taking longer than
allowed by the specifications to be delivered to the site after being batched. Because of
this, the mix was slightly out of specification. It was decided to allow the wall pour to
proceed. Testing of samples taken during the pour show that the strength of the
concrete was as specified, 4000 psi.
During excavation around the old discharge vault structure (which was eventually
abandoned and filled with concrete) it was discovered that a sewer line from the old Mill
building was discharging into the vault. Since the old discharge structure was to be
abandoned, it was necessary to re-route the existing sewer line into the new Discharge
3
