' DATA-LOGGER
' To insure that the proper procedures were followed during the fabrication of
this pipeline, the project specifications required that the persons doing the actual
' fusion procedures be certified by the pipe manufacturer, CP Chem. In addition, a
"data-logger" device was required to be used on the fusing machine. The data-
logger produces a graph that records the time and pressure used to form the fusion
joint, as well as recording the face temperature of the heating unit used to heat the
' pipe faces. This results in a permanent record of all of the fusion joints made during
this project. In addition, an engineer from W. W. Wheeler and Associates, Inc.
' (Wheeler) was on hand during most of the fusion processes to personally witness
the fusion procedures. CP Chem also certified the Wheeler engineer witnessing the
testing of pipe fusion procedures. All df the fusion joints witnessed were made per
the PPI guidelines, and were determined to be acceptable.
' The records from the data-logger are .included in Appendix A. All of the .
traces appear to be acceptable, and all of the heater temperatures were between
' 413 and 448 degrees F., which is in accordance with the PPI procedures. A total of
129 fusion joints were recorded. Two of the traces, joints #15 and #17, show
' problems with the original joints, due to transient problems with the fusion
equipment. In the case of joint #15, the joint was pulled apart, the pipe was
' resurfaced to remove any questionable material, and the joint was remade (#161• In
the case of joint #17, the heater was reapplied for the required amount of time, and
' the joint was re-made (#181. In both cases, the joints in question were visually
inspected by Wheeler personnel and found to be acceptable.
Please note that the dates listed on the data-logger are incorrect. The
' welding began August 25, 2003. In addition, due to some previous records being
left in the data-logger, the Climax Storke Pipeline data begins at joint #5. These
' factors do not affect the accuracy of the graphs produced.
' 4
