P.IO GRANDE COUNTY AREA, COLORADO <br />moist; massive; slightly hard, friable; calcareous; <br />very strongly alkaline. <br />The A horizon is 9 to S inches thick. In cultivated areas <br />the A3 horizon has been mixed ir.CO the p!ou~ layer. The <br />P,?t horizon; is 4 to 16 inches thick. Exchangeable sodium <br />in the B horizmt and in the upper part of the C horizon <br />ranges from 15 to 30 percent Depth to the sandy C horizon <br />is generally 30 to 40 inches. <br />,lIs-~Ioeca loamy =and. This pearl}- level soil oc- <br />cupies old flood plains and the lower end of broad <br />alluvial fans in the east-central and northeastern parts <br />of the Area. Slopes are 0 to 1 percent. The water table <br />is at a depth of 48 to GO inches. About IO percent of this <br />unit is included areas of San Luis sandy loam, LAOrte <br />gravellc sandy loam, and Gunbarrel loam}- sand. Some <br />areas are about 5 percent areas of Hooper loamy sand. <br />Spots of Zinzer and San Arcacio soils occur in places. <br />Runoff is slow. The soil blo«-ing hazard is high. <br />This soil is used for irrigated potatoes, small grain, <br />alfalfa, and vegetables and for range. Capability unit <br />IIIe-? irrigated, ~'lIe-1 nonirrigated; Salt Flats range <br />site. <br />Norte Series <br />The Norte series consists of moderately well drained <br />soils 24 to 40 inches deep over gravel and sand. These <br />soils formed in gravelly alhn~ium on broad alluvial fans. <br />Slopes are 0 to 1 percent. Elevation is 7,b00 to 8,300 <br />feet. Natural vegetation is dominanth' blue grama, <br />Indian ricegrass, and lots rabbitbrush. The average an- <br />nual precipitation is about 7 inches, the mean annual <br />air temperature is about,~ll° F, and the Post-fi~ee sea- <br />son is 90 to 100 days. <br />Ina representative profile the surface lacer and <br />underlying material to a depth of 30 inches ace dark <br />g'ray-ish brown gravel(}~ sanch- loam. Pelow this is very <br />~~~racellc loamy- sand that extends to a depth of GO <br />inches or more. <br />Permeability is moderatelc rapid, and the available <br />~yater capacity is low or moderate. Reaction is mod- <br />eratelc alkaline. The effective rooting depth is 2d to 40 <br />inches. Depth to the IiC horizon is ?-( to 40 inches. Thi; <br />horizon is eery gravelly (Dame sand or sand that i; i0 to <br />SU percent gravel and cobbles. <br />No-Norte gravelh saadv loan[. This pearl}~ level <br />soil occupies the ]ova- end of broad alluvial fans, mainly <br />in the northeastern part of the Area. Slopes are 0 to <br />1 percent. The profile of this soil is the one described <br />as representative of the series. The [voter table is eom- <br />monly- at a depth of 36 to GO inches and is highest in <br />summer. It is manipulated be a system of chains and <br />checks. About 25 percent of this tutu is included areas <br />of Quamon gravelly sand}~ loam, 10 percent areas of <br />Dunul cobbl}- sanch- loam, and 10 percent San Arcacio <br />sandy loam. <br />P,unaff is slow. The soil blowing hazard is moderate. <br />This soil is used most(}- for irrigated crops, chiefly <br />potatoes. Small grain, alfalfa, and vegetables are also <br />grown. Some small areas are used for range. Capability <br />unit IIIs-? irrigated, FIIs-7 nonirrigated; Il~Iountain <br />Outtvash range site. <br />Nr-Norte-Donal complex. This nearly level map- <br />pim~' unit occupies the upper end of broad alluvial fans, <br />mainly in the north-central part of the Area. Slopes are <br />0 to 7 percent. This unit is about 40 pet•cent Norte <br />gravely- sandy loam and I0 percent Dunul cobbl} sandy <br />loam. In unleveled areas there are many small stcales <br />and ridges. The ridges are 1 to 2 feet higher than the <br />styales. Norte gravel(} sandy loam and Dunul cobbly <br />sandy- loam have the profiles described as representative <br />of their respective series. About 20 percent of this unit <br />is included areas of Quamon gravelly- sandy loam. <br />Popoff is slow. The soil blowing hazard is low to <br />moderate. <br />This mapping unit is used for irrigated potatoes, <br />small grain, alfalfa. and vegetables and for range. <br />Capability- unit I~~s-7 irrigated, ~'IIs-7 nonirrigated; <br />D[ottntain Outtyash range site. <br />Platoro Series <br />The Platoro series consists of cell drained soils 20 <br />to 40 inches deep over gravel and sand. These soils <br />formed in alluvium Dyer gravelly- alluvium on alluvial <br />fans and terraces. Slopes are 0 to 3 percent. Elevation <br />is 7,600 to S,S00 feet. Natural vegetation is dominantly <br />bhte grama, Indian ricegrass, ring muhly, and western <br />wheatgrass. The ayerae~e annual precipitation is about <br />S inches, the mean annual air temperature is about <br />41° F, and the frost-free season is 90 to 105 does. <br />In a representative profile the surface layer•and up- <br />per 3 inc!tes of the subsoil are dark grayish brown <br />loam. The lower ll inches of the subsoil is dark brown <br />light clay loam. The substratum is about 8 inches oY <br />dark bro~yn eery gravellc loam over very- gravelly sand <br />that extends to a depth of GO inches or more. <br />These soils are used for irrigated crops and for <br />range. <br />
