The existing pond area of 6.45 acres will not be expanded or lessened for the post-mining land use
\J
~~
although the configuration of the ponds will change, as is seen on Map F. For this reason, no gravel
well permit is needed.
Quaternary age flooding of the River produced the gravel deposits (with alluvial gold) that currently
exist on the site. Uphill and east of the site is the Columbia Ditch, which is also owned by the
Ducommun Trust and has been in place for many decades. It supplied past mining operations with
water to wash gold from the gravel. This ditch begins at the Columbia Reservoir north of the permit
area and can be intercepted at any location in the permit azea to provide water to the site. The ditch is
eazth lined and is approximately 3.0 feet wide and 1.5 feet deep. It is used during the spring, summer
and fall months and requires maintenance from time to time. The ditch is outside the permit area since
it has been in place for many decades. This ditch will be used to provide some water to either of the
mining operations and will probably also be used to supply ponds once the post mining site is ready
for development.
2. Water Use for the Operation
Water for processing, dust control and materials handling will come from two sources that the
Ducommun Trust has on the site:
1) All water available from the pump at the "Point of Diversion" in the South Platte River as shown
on Map C-2. This right is owned by the Trust and allows water extraction up to 5.0 cfs. The gold
operation has used this source in the past mining and processing activities.
2) The Tmst also can use the Columbia Ditch located immediately east of the permit area. Two
existing takeoff ditches bring water to the permit area. This ditch can also be used to supply the site
only to the point that the combined flow from both sources does not exceed 60.0 cfs.
• Alma Placer 7/03 55
