The AvR system has been in us since the
mill began operating last year and has consistently chieved the
pH compliance criteria as set forth in the approved permit for
the facility.
The tailings pond was frozen over this past wi ter due to
one of the coldest winters on record for the San L is valley.
This past month as our pond began to thaw, Batt a Mountain
Resources' ("BMR") sampling of cyanide concentratio s revealed
levels higher than anticipated.
BMR believes that an expeditious response to the current
tailings pond cyanide levels is appropriate. We propose to
reduce the cyanide levels in the pond through the addition of
zinc ferrous sulfate. This chemical is commonly used as a
cyanide detoxification chemical in the mining Indus ry and the
by-products of the detoxification reaction have been emonstrated
to be stable and environmentally benign. In ouzo view, the
procedure should be implemented as soon as possible) because of
the potential attraction of open water to waterfowl during the
spring migration. Therefore, BMR intends to comme~ce addition
of the zinc ferrous sulfate no later than March 31, 1 92. Please
contact me immediately if you have any questions r concerns
whatsoever with this proposal.
For the longer term, BMR is currently conducting an overall
performance evaluation of the AVR system and is determining
whether alternative or additional detoxification technology could
be appropriate for the facility. We anticipate tha evaluation
to be completed on or about May 1, 1992. BMR intend to provide
your office with the results of the study along with its
conclusions regardinc ^erfc>nance of the s•pstem ar~d potential
;a l'I \1'i~R Pff 1]V11 '~~ ~ - ~ ~ ~... .~. -~~. •~.,.n-U. ~nj fPLF\'~;Mu
