small burnet, 'Delar'
MANAGEMENT
and
uses
of
'DELAR' SMALL
BURNET
Smu~uisorba minor
IN IDAHO AND UTAH
1
~~~,
q~~r~
5p n„%~
~~;
'Delar' small burnet (Sanguisorba minor, Scorp.) is a hardy, relatively long-
lived perennial evergreen forb from a usually-branched caudex with a tap
root, often somewhat rhizomatous. It has alternate pinnately compound leaves;
basal leaves several and somewhat rosulate. Leaflets mostly g-17, oval to
oblong, 1 to 2.cm long, and coarsely serrate. The flowering stems are usually
several and nostly branched above. Total height varies from 15 cm on the
more droughty sites to approximately 60 cm on irrigated sites.
The flowers are sessile and closely packed in headlike to elongate spikes
which are 8 to 20 mn long. .Flowers are mostly imperfect. The flower has
no petals and about 12 stamens which are filiform. The fruit or seed is an
achene, oblong, approximately 4-5 mm long, woody, and papillate-warty between,
as well as along rather prominent ridges which usually are four in number.
ADAPTATION
Based on results from testing Delar, it has a wide range of soils and climate
it is adapted to. This includes average annual precipitation of 12 inches
(30.5 cm.) or more. It will establish and grow on soils with a pH up to
8.0 and has survived winter temperatures as low as -33 degrees F. with
minimal snow cover. It is not well adapted to poorly drained soils which
have. high water tables.
Delar could be used as a component in seed mixtures planted for range restora-
tion. It does not tolerate much shade and would be best suited for use with
species which do not completely overtop it. It is not recommended for seed-
ing alone or as a predominant plant for livestock forage production.
ID-7-N-20000-414
