At first I didn't realize what this
"one time event" really meant to us as landowners on the Animas River. While in
Durango several weeks ago I became aware of the 112 Permit for the Thomas Pit. After
reviewing this it seems that this project is a lot more complicated than the letter implied.
As a recently new land owner I would like to see a whole lot more information submitted
and discussed before a permit of this magnitude is granted.
In discussions with many of the neighbors in the area, it seems that there has been an
excess amount of erosion directly related to the extensive mining of the river already.
This mining operation has not been operative for the last three years and should not be
reopened without some reassurances that it will not make matters worse.
If you have further information available that will help enlighten me on this subject I
would appreciate knowing how to get it. The Animas River is a very fragile asset to the
area and I don't want to see it harmed by mismanagement. Based on the information I
have gathered from the 112 Permit I am not in favor of allowing it to move forward.
I wanted to express my opinion to you and thank you for your consideration in this.
Sincere] yours,
W.
