iii iiiiiiiiiiiii iii
999
STATE OF COLORADO
Roy Romer, Governor
D'.PARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
DAVID C- SHELTON, Director
July 8, 1987
Mr. William P. Balaz
Kaiser Coal Corporation
102 South Tejon, Suite 800
Colorado Springs, Colorado 80901-2679
Re: Somerset Mine - June Subsidence Report for Hubbard Creek Monuments -
NOV No. C-87-012 Abatement - Fiie No. C-81-022
Dear Bill:
Jim Pendleton has reviewed the June 17 subsidence monitoring results for the
Somerset Mine. The monuments show vertical and horizontal movements of up to
0.2 feet. In many cases the movements have been upward. These movements are
reported to be the result of a recent active landslide immediately uphill from
the monument installation. Prior to development of the Hubbard Creek
facilities an ancient landslide existed on the slope. This landslide was then
exacerbated by U. S. Steel exploration activities. The recent active slide
has been observed by Mr. Pendleton during the past several years.
The monument grid in question has been in place since October, 1984. Visual
and survey monitoring has not detected any significant subsidence caused by
the limited mining beneath and adjoining Hubbard Creek. For this reason,
considering the cessation of mining within the underlying Somerset Mine
workings, the Division does not believe it appropriate to require any remedial
action at this time. In the event that the Hubbard Creek workings are
reopened we may consider remedial treatments.
Thank you for your cooperation in completing the June 17 survey.
Sincerely,
~~~-~~~
Thomas A.
